The heart of Chinatown in Melbourne might seem an unusual place to find an Indian restaurant, but the award-winning Gaylord has been here so long (since 1985, in fact) that it’s practically an institution. Once inside, the place grabs your attention with its striking mix of elaborate gold wallpaper, plush red chairs, lanterns and chandeliers hanging from the mirrored ceiling, and regular traditional live music. Equally arresting are Gaylord’s authentic Indian dishes, bursting with exotic aromas and flavours. Choices could include Malabar prawn curry featuring marinated prawns cooked with cream and a mild Kashmiri sauce, or marinated eye fillet steak, cooked in the tandoor and served with a mushroom sauce.
